UIC is proud to announce that its second Global Rail Sustainability Report has been released, building on the success of the inaugural 2022 edition. This report serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding the global rail sector’s progress towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as outlined in the 2030 Agenda. It highlights how railways remain the most sustainable form of motorised transport, emphasising their role in providing safe, affordable, and accessible transport systems for all.
Key insights from the 2023 report include updated performance metrics from the Rail Sustainability Index (RSi) which tracks the efforts of railway companies in areas such as energy efficiency, emission reduction, and sustainable practices.
When announcing the report at InnoTrans 2024, UIC Director General François Davenne highlighted how, “UIC is in the privileged position of being able to collate information from its members, shedding light on the action being taken in rail to ensure that train travel remains the cleanest and greenest mode of mass transport. This report highlights the progress made by the sector and inspires collaboration to accelerate our journey towards a more sustainable future.”
The report also features the UIC Sustainability Impact Awards (SIA) which honour and showcase outstanding achievements in the global railway sector with a focus on sustainability.
Lucie Anderton, UIC Head of Sustainability, congratulated the finalists of the awards by saying, “The UIC Sustainability Impact Awards highlight the remarkable efforts of the global rail sector in embracing sustainability. The 16 case studies in this report showcase the innovation driving real change across different Sustainable Development Goals."
As we look to the future, the 2023 Global Rail Sustainability Report calls for all rail companies globally and all UIC members to commit to sharing knowledge and data to help accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable transport system.
