UIC was invited by the United Nations to join the Global Decision Makers Consultation on Implementing Sustainable Transport in the Post 2015 development agenda. UIC Director General Jean-Pierre Loubinoux recorded a video message which was played back at the meeting in New York on 26 September 2013.

Engaging with the United Nations allows UIC to influence transport policy at global level and promote investment in rail as a sustainable form of transport. An example of the investment that is available is the $175 Billion pledged for sustainable transport by the world’s eight largest development banks at Rio+20. Discussion with the UN also allows UIC to follow and influence the development of the post-2015 Results Framework. The ability of UIC to provide data on behalf for the rail sector for comparison against the post 2015 Results Framework will be vital for securing additional investment in rail networks and making the most of our position as the backbone of sustainable transport systems.
